The Death Metal of Lars Von Trier

Lars Von Trier demands a second look.  Long on of Seattle's hottest death metal properties, Lars is breaking loose into new entertainment circles.  This indepth inverview will explore faces of Lars as we look at the man and the music.

Authur:  Tell me about yourself ?

Lars: I am the lead vocalist and front man for the death metal band "Kill Kill Kitty".  KKK is only my latest band. You may remember my embryonic band “Garfield's Lies”. I created Garfield as a celebration of my love of death metal and my hatred of cats. Unfortunately we had to dissolve Garfield after a series of horrible accidents befell our drummers, but that's in the past.

Authur:  Tell me about your current band.

Lars:  We had to reorganize as a new band in order to break what we called "The Odie Curse".  The name Kill Kill Kitty sprung from my derision of the "Hello Kitty" product line.  The crass commercialism of a hateful figure spoke to the dark soul.  We first came up with the name "Goodbye Mangled Kitty" for the band, but the acronym "KKK" seemed catchier

Authur: What did you do before you came to Seattle?

Lars: Music is my life.  As a high school student I attended the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities.  I continued my studies in North Carolina at the The Music Academy.  Death metal entered my life when I saw Kings of Prussia at Lexington Avenue Arts Festival.  I was in love with darkness.  Metal took over. My family moved to Seattle and here I am now!

Authur:  What are you doing now besides the death metal?  You are locally acclaimed for your dark, blistering sound, harsh vocals, and macabre, proudly Satanic imagery.   What else do you have going on?

Lars:  Believe it or not, I am busy mixing my first love, contra dancing, with the mistress of death metal.

Authur: Tell me more about your involvement in contra dancing.

Lars: I started contra dancing in Greenville and continued in Asheville. I still dance some in Seattle, but KKK keeps me pretty busy.  I learned how to call contra while I was still in North Carolina.   The excellent callers in the region were inspiring, promoting the fun side of contra dancing.  It was Beth Molaro who said “the number one rule is to have fun”. I've taken that to heart.

Authur:  You are now promoting a thing called death contra.  This is an offspring from techno contra?

Lars: Yes!   I attended a techno contra and my eyes were opened! I knew that the high-energy, driving death metal was a perfect fit from contra dancing.  I'm also into living life large.  Techno contra almost fed that part of my life, but the events are still alcohol free.  The clothing is skimpier and the music is hip, but I'm into a little skin as possible and as much action as possible.   I've changed all that. Death contra is not family friendly. We indulge everything. There is no accident that I have medics on hand during each of my events.

Authur: What is in Lars' future?

Lars: More death, both in the metal and contra worlds.  The sky is the limit as I reveal the darkness of humanity and felines as I give people a reason to dance.

While I can't speak to Lars' preoccupation with cats, I can say that he is one of the hottest properties on both the metal and contra scenses.  Remember to check out our Seattle News Express Now event calendar for more information on where you can see Lars, Kill Kill Kitty and death contra!
